Every story has a beginning, and mine started a long time before Moniiki™ saw the light of day. My fashion journey started as a little girl, dressed in my grandmother's exquisite creations - right out of a fairy tale. It continued with my mother, who is a fashionista of note, and who helped develop my own fashion-identity. Growing up in Mossel Bay's picturesque environment nurtured my creativity, to the extent where for three years I participated in an inter-school wear-art fashion event promoting upcycling and recycling. It was quite important to me, as it combined my love for art, fashion and nature together. As a result, I managed to produce a five-piece wear-art range completely made from upcycled and recycled materials in matric for the year’s art project.
After school I moved to Cape Town to study for a National Diploma in Fashion Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Cape Town is a magical city and provided me with a lot of inspiration on my journey as an artist and designer. The three years that I spent at CPUT provided me with a structured road map for my journey and sowed the seed for what Moniiki™ would become. For our final year’s fashion show, I again made a range consisting or five outfits, which was a huge success from a design perspective.
I was fortunate to be offered a position as junior CAD designer at Elan Polo International, a shoe design and manufacturing company with a branch in Cape Town, while still in the final weeks of my studies. Elan Polo is one of the suppliers for Foschini, Woolworths and Truworths, and my role focussed on designing girls shoe ranges. It was a challenging time, and enjoyable as it was, I realized after a few months that the corporate industry did not provide enough creative stimulation. Even though my husband was working while studying towards his own National Diploma in Interior Design, we both decided it was time to make a big leap into the unknown with me starting my own business, namely Moniiki™, in 2017.
It was a very successful decision, and even though it provided a lot of challenges to overcome, I never looked back. Moniiki™ has since then grown into a successful business of designing custom wear for a wide range of clients. Apart from my bespoke design clientele, I am planning on launching several ready to wear ranges in the near future, which will be available for purchase online.
Together with my husband, Gerrie, we started a new company called Zen Collective (Pty) Ltd, with my fashion design trading as Moniiki™ and his interior design trading as ZEN Interiors™. We will also use the Zen Collective (Pty) Ltd for our online shop, which can be found at www.zencollective.online.
So, from 2019 we have been able to provide an even wider range of creative solutions to all our clients.
I would like to invite all our clients and friends to share in our future of creating beautiful art, in whatever form it might take.
